Ohio State Buckeyes x Legacy Collection

SLAM’s Legacy Collection dives inside the archives to bring back some college basketball classics. Like the originals, we crafted each Legacy pair of retro shorts with the materials and details to honor the original designs. It was a labor of love in our pursuit to provide an era specific keepsake that celebrates the most iconic styles in college basketball history.

'92 Ohio State Legacy

Jim Jackson was one of the best college basketball players to ever play in the Big Ten.  Since arriving in Columbus he helped the Buckeyes get to back to back NCAA tournaments including a 1-seed in 1991.  But he saved the best for last in '92.  Jackson averaged 23 points and 7 rebounds per game in his junior year.  He won Big Ten Player of the Year honors and was a first-team All-American.

And the 1992 Ohio State basketball team was the best yet, winning the conference outright, and again getting a 1-seed in the NCAA Tournament.  As good as JJ was, he had help.  Chris Jent and Lawrence Funderburke combined for 25 points and 11 rebounds per game while Jamaal Brown kicked in 10 more a night in the backcourt.

The Buckeyes opened the NCAA Tournament with an easy 83-56 win over Mississippi Valley State before blowing out UConn, 78-55 which setup a showdown with the 4-seed, North Carolina.  Ohio State trailed by five at the half, but stormed back behind Jackson and Funderburke to win it 80-73.

The only thing standing between the Buckeyes and the Final Four was their rival, Michigan.  The Fab Five had matured into a March force and reached the regional final as a 6-seed.

It was a game worthy of the stakes, but it ended in disappointment.  Ohio State fell in OT, 75-71.  The loss was disappointing, but nothing could take away from the excellence of a season where Ohio State won an outright Big Ten crown in a league that included two Final Four teams, Michigan and Indiana.
